Tavernas in Crete vary greatly in price and quality and it is best to apply common sense when choosing where to eat. Restaurants lining the sea front in major resorts are often expensive and may not offer an authentic experience. If you look around the streets off the main areas you will often find cheaper tavernas serving better food. Nearly all tavernas will bring you a glass or jug of raki, before or after your meal, free of charge. It is incredibly strong and not for the faint hearted!
